Homemade Sandwich Bread

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Rise Time: 1–2 hours
Bake Time: 30–35 minutes
Total Time: About 2.5 hours
Servings: 1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp butter (softened) or oil

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast
In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Make the Dough
Add butter, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined, then gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead
Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. First Rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. Shape the Dough
Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan.

  6. Second Rise
Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until it puffs above the pan.

  7. Bake
Bake at 350°F for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown.

  8. Cool & Slice
Let cool before slicing for best texture.

Tips

  • Use bread flour for a slightly chewier texture.

  • Brush the top with butter after baking for a soft crust.

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
